Born History & Concept
Created in 1994, the Born brand is conceptualized around the enduring nature of art and devotion for beautiful, handcrafted comfort. It is one of the best footwear brands, due to a legacy of more than a century of experience, as Born originated from H.H. Brown – a leading shoe manufacturer since 1883. Based on over 100 years of shoemaking knowledge, today Born produces casual footwear for women, men, and kids.
Thomas McClaskie is the President and Creative Director at Born Shoes. Under his helm, Born has been carrying on with tradition, by following the Born ethos, defined by their signature handcrafted stitch in producing artisan comfort footwear. Born designers make sure that every season has a unique and suitable collection on offer. Inspiration for each new season comes from themes based on geographic locations (for example, the great American west, or the Rockies).
Through seasonal change and deep rooted focus on quality, Born constantly creates incredible footwear. Their followers are hooked to the fact that Born Shoes feel as good as they look.
Born is a brand that cares about your comfort. Each design is a visionary work of art, achieved through a free-spirited independent attitude. Each pair of shoes is handcrafted with exquisite materials, like the finest leathers sourced from across the world. The final product is a set standard for high-quality artisan footwear that embodies hand finishings and details that are unique to Born. The brand boasts of offering beauty in comfort. The patented comfort feature is achieved through its unmatchable construction experience and visionary shoemaking artistry.
Quality & Manufacturing Technique
Enough can’t be said about the use of quality materials (leather, suede, nubuck) in Born manufacturing. The high-quality leathers are extraordinarily soft, comfortable, and durable. Fabrics used are no less exceptional. For example, there’s abundant usage of specialty fabrics like natural linen and plush velvet, in the spring and fall seasons, respectively.
'Opanka' (Hand-Stitching Technique)
Born creates shoes that are comfortable and lightweight. To achieve this they use their signature hand-stitching technique called ‘Opanka’. Through the technique, Born achieves a high-quality artisan crafted pair of shoes with the following key benefits:
- “Ultra Cushioning”
- Artistic Detail
Born shoes will flex and move with your foot, giving you a natural feel. With “Ultra Cushioning”, the shoe conforms to the foot and rebounds with every step you take. The famed stitching process combined with specialty padded foot beds and wide toe boxes, add to the comfort. From the outsole to the upper part of the shoe, each shoe is intricately designed and a work of art. The high-quality outsoles (rubber or polyurethane) are light-weight and include shock-absorbing properties. Also, there are added layers of padding throughout the footbed, whereby high-quality sock linings surround the foot in comfort.

In case of full-grain or veg leather styles – To clean the shoe, use a soft damp cloth, gently rubbing and cleaning across the surface. To maintain the shoe, apply a neutral leather cream, for buffing the surface with a soft clean cloth. As a word of caution, be skeptical of some shoe care products, that may darken or discolor the leather. Also, it’s suggested that you test any new products on a small area on the shoe, before applying to the entire shoe.
In case of suede and nubuck styles – To clean the shoe, use a soft damp cloth for wiping out the surface dirt. Use a suede brush and a crepe bar, for cleaning the more significant stains and marks. Treat the material with a protective suede spray immediately after purchase, in order to maintain the product from the time it is purchased. Finally, some shoe care products may darken or discolor the leather; be sure to test any products on a small area prior to applying to the entire shoe.
